: The King's Unhappy Marriages
Henry VIII, King of England from 1509 to 1547, is infamous for his six marriages. Each of his wives played a significant role in his life and in the history of England. Their stories are filled with love, power, betrayal, and tragedy.
Catherine of Aragon
Catherine of Aragon was Henry VIII's first wife. She was the daughter of King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain. Catherine was a devout Catholic and a strong-willed woman. She refused to accept Henry's divorce from her, which led to her downfall. Catherine died in 1533, after being banished from court.
Anne Boleyn
Anne Boleyn was Henry VIII's second wife. She was a lady-in-waiting to Catherine of Aragon. Anne was a beautiful and ambitious woman. She quickly won Henry's favor and became his mistress. Anne was crowned queen in 1533, after Henry divorced Catherine. Anne's marriage to Henry was short-lived. She was accused of adultery and treason and was executed in 1536.
Jane Seymour
Jane Seymour was Henry VIII's third wife. She was a lady-in-waiting to Anne Boleyn. Jane was a gentle and pious woman. She was Henry's favorite wife and the only one to bear him a legitimate son, Edward VI. Jane died in 1537, shortly after giving birth to Edward.
Anne of Cleves
Anne of Cleves was Henry VIII's fourth wife. She was the daughter of Duke William of Cleves. Anne was a Protestant and a plain-looking woman. Henry was disappointed with his new wife and had her marriage annulled in 1540. Anne remained in England and became a close friend of Princess Elizabeth.
Catherine Howard
Catherine Howard was Henry VIII's fifth wife. She was a cousin of Anne Boleyn. Catherine was a beautiful and flirtatious woman. She quickly won Henry's favor and became his mistress. Catherine was crowned queen in 1540, after Henry annulled his marriage to Anne of Cleves. Catherine's marriage to Henry was also short-lived. She was accused of adultery and treason and was executed in 1542.
Catherine Parr
Catherine Parr was Henry VIII's sixth and final wife. She was a widow and a Protestant. Catherine was a intelligent and cultured woman. She was a good stepmother to Henry's children and a loyal wife. Catherine survived Henry and remarried after his death. She died in 1548.
