Excerpt
The night before Mother's Day, the lake house was filled with the sound of laughter and music. But beneath the surface of the celebration, there was a current of sadness. Everyone knew that this would be the last Mother's Day that they would spend with their matriarch, Evelyn.
Evelyn was dying. She had been diagnosed with cancer a few months earlier, and the disease had progressed rapidly. But even though she was facing death, Evelyn was determined to make this Mother's Day special for her family.
She had invited her two daughters, her three granddaughters, and her great-granddaughter to the lake house for a weekend of celebration. And even though they were all aware of the gravity of her condition, they were determined to make the most of it.
They spent the day swimming, fishing, and playing games. They talked and laughed and shared stories. And they all tried to ignore the elephant in the room: the fact that Evelyn was dying.
But as the sun began to set, the mood changed. Evelyn asked her daughters to sit down with her on the porch. She took their hands in hers and looked at them with love and sadness.
"I'm so glad you're all here," she said. "I love you all so much."
Her daughters started to cry. They knew that this was goodbye.
Evelyn smiled. "Don't cry," she said. "I'm not going anywhere. I'll always be with you in your hearts."
She kissed her daughters on the cheek and then closed her eyes. A few minutes later, she took her last breath.
The night before Mother's Day, Evelyn died peacefully in the arms of her loved ones. And even though they were heartbroken, they knew that she would always be with them.
