Septimius Severus was a Roman emperor who ruled from 193 to 211 CE. He was born in Leptis Magna, in the province of Africa, and was the first emperor to come from outside Italy. Severus was a successful general and a skilled politician, and he restored the Roman Empire to its former glory.

Early Life and Career

Septimius Severus was born in Leptis Magna on April 11, 146 CE. His father was a Roman knight, and his mother was a Berber princess. Severus received a good education, and he studied law and rhetoric. He began his military career in 170 CE, and he quickly rose through the ranks. He served in the Parthian War of 191-195 CE, and he distinguished himself in battle.

In 193 CE, Severus was appointed governor of Pannonia Superior. He was a popular governor, and he quickly gained the support of the army. When the emperor Pertinax was assassinated in 193 CE, Severus was proclaimed emperor by his troops. He marched on Rome and defeated his rivals, Clodius Albinus and Pescennius Niger.
