John Francis Patrick Murphy was born in a small town in Ireland in 1853. His parents were poor farmers, and they struggled to make ends meet. When John was 10 years old, his family decided to immigrate to America in search of a better life.

The Murphys arrived in New York City with very little money. They settled in a poor neighborhood, and John's parents worked long hours at menial jobs to support their family. John attended school, but he often had to help out at home. He worked odd jobs after school and on weekends to earn extra money.

Despite the challenges he faced, John was determined to succeed. He was a bright and ambitious young man, and he had a strong work ethic. He eventually got a job as a clerk in a dry goods store. He worked hard and quickly rose through the ranks. Within a few years, he was managing the store.

In 1885, John married Mary Ellen Kehoe, the daughter of another Irish immigrant family. They had five children together. John continued to work hard and save money. He eventually opened his own dry goods store. The store was a success, and John became a wealthy man.
