In the early days of railroading, work songs were an essential part of the job. These songs helped to coordinate the efforts of the workers and to make the work more bearable. The songs were often simple and repetitive, but they were also full of energy and spirit. Some of the most popular work songs were "Drill, Ye Tarriers, Drill" and "Paddy Works on the Erie Canal."

As the railroad expanded westward, so too did the diversity of its workforce. African American workers played a major role in the construction and maintenance of the railroads. They brought with them their own unique musical traditions, including spirituals and work songs. Spirituals were often sung by African American workers as a way to express their faith and to cope with the hardships of their lives. Work songs were used to coordinate the efforts of the workers and to make the work more bearable.

The railroad also played a major role in the development of American popular music. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, railroad stations were often the first places where people from different parts of the country could hear new music. This led to the spread of new musical styles, such as ragtime and jazz. Railroad workers also played a role in the development of these new styles. Many of the early jazz musicians were railroad workers, and they brought their own unique experiences and musical influences to the new genre.

The musical heritage of railroad America is a rich and diverse one. It is a story of how music helped to shape the American railroad experience. From the work songs of the Irish immigrants who laid the first tracks to the spirituals sung by African American workers during the Jim Crow era, this music is a testament to the strength and resilience of the American people.

Lavishly illustrated with period photographs and featuring an extensive discography, Chants, Harp, Hymns, Psalms, Spirituals is a must-read for anyone interested in American music, history, or culture.
